Communications Officer Trainee

Salary: Starting at $20/hour based on a 35-hour work week

Position Type: Full-time Term (September 2017 - March 2018)

Description

This is an eight-month mentorship position (September 2017 to March 29, 2018). The posting is partially funded by Indian and Northern Affairs Canada, and as such must be filled by a First Nation individual with a registration number (preference to Kwanlin Dün First Nation).

You will have an understanding of social media (Facebook and Twitter predominantly) and web communications, and will be joining Kwanlin Dün to learn more about strategic external communications in a government setting.

As the successful candidate, you will have a strong interest and demonstrated skill in one or more of the many areas of communications which may include writing, journalism/media relations, marketing, videography, photography, public relations, design, multi-media, etc.

You will be willing and able to be trained in strategic communications, media relations and writing, as required.

Qualifications:

• Certificate of Indian Status registration number (Status Number)
• Knowledge of Kwanlin Dün First Nation people, history & culture
• Grade 12 writing level
• In-depth knowledge and understanding of, and experience with, social media platforms
• Education, experience, or demonstrated skill in: writing, journalism/media relations
marketing, videography, photography, public relations, design, multi-media, etc.
• A genuine interest in communications and a willingness and ability to learn
• Positive, constructive attitude

Note: Knowledge of the elements of a strategic communication plan; role of the media; understanding of the importance of guiding government documents such as the KDFN Final and Self-government agreements and KDFN’s Strategic Plan are an asset, as well as an understanding of KDFN’s target audience and how to reach them.

Conditions of Employment: Satisfactory criminal records check, signed conflict of interest declaration and confidentiality agreement, and an automatic payroll-deduction of financial obligations owed to KDFN is a prerequisite to employment by KDFN government for all positions
