Community Safety Officer

Salary: $29.42 - $37.44 per hour depending on qualifications

Position Type: Full-Time Term to March 31, 2021 with possible extension

Kwanlin Dün First Nation (KDFN) is seeking a Community Safety Officer. The position is responsible for responding to incidents to provide support and intervention, for day-to-day safety of citizens in crisis, developing and maintaining positive relationships, and working with By-Law, RCMP and other external partners.

The ideal candidate will have excellent conflict resolution, counselling, and mediation skills. Demonstration of patience, empathy, good judgement, moral fitness, ethical standards, and healthy lifestyle are essential to this position.

Our successful candidate will participate in six-weeks of training (with pay) to gain the knowledge and accreditation required for this position. Additional assessments including skill ability and personal suitability for the role will be conducted.

• Grade 12, Graduation Equivalency Diploma (GED) or equivalent
• Coursework in conflict resolution, diffusing difficult situations or similar is an asset
• Experience working with people in crisis in a social welfare capacity (paid or volunteer)
• Experience using computers with proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook, as well as common office equipment (telephone, fax, photocopier)
• Experience in investigational report writing is an asset
• Experience working within the formal justice system in the areas of youth justice, adult protection, corrections, probations or social welfare is an asset
• Experience working in partnership with other agencies is an asset
• Experience working successfully in a First Nation community is an asset

Job Requirements:

• Willingness to work ‘shift work,’ including weekends and holidays
• Physical capacity to perform the duties necessary of Safety Officers in the environment and conditions of the KDFN traditional territory

Knowledge of Indigenous Peoples history with formal justice, residential and child welfare systems and familiarity with Kwanlin Dün First Nation agreements, history, culture, and goals is required for success in this position.

• First Aid/CPR certification
• Acceptable criminal record check with vulnerable sector search
• Valid Class 5 Driver’s license and reliable transportation
• Maintain mandatory confidentiality
• Compliance with KDFN Occupational Health & Safety policies
