Description

Reporting to the Director, Health & Wellness or designate, the cook will be responsible for preparing health meals, with traditional foods for various land based healing activities.

The successful candidate will demonstrate respect to attendees, staff, clients and all guests of land based healing activities. Confidentiality is very important for our clients and guests and must be abided by at all times. You will work well leading and motivating a small team, and demonstrate wellness/sobriety at all times.

Cooks are expected to follow the approved menu, and ensuring food is prepared (including traditional foods) on time, is healthy and nutritious. Maintaining a clean kitchen, abiding by health and safety regulations at all times are requirements of the job. As the lead in the kitchen, the cook will be responsible for supervising and mentoring cook helpers, and delegating duties to the assigned to assist with the above. Additional duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to pre and post camp cabin set up and take down, laundering of bedding, towels and similar items, and the daily cleaning and stocking of the wash house/ shower rooms.

Job Qualifications:

• Culinary Arts certification from YT College is desired; we will accept a minimum of Food Safe Level 1 (Level 2 preferred) and combined with significant experience overseeing support staff in a kitchen
• Experience preparing and adhering to menus within allotted budgets;
• Experience preparing and presenting food while abiding by regulations and quality standards;
• Experience preparing fish and wild game including knowledge of traditional practice;
• Experience cooking in a camp setting is an asset;
• Demonstrated reliability (obtained through reference checks).

The Cook must possess a valid class 5 driver’s license and have reliable transportation as you may be shopping and the work takes place at various locations outside of Whitehorse city limits at times.

Condition of Employment: Current Food Safe Level 2, WHMIS, First Aid & CPR and an acceptable criminal records check (including vulnerable sector) MUST be completed prior to starting work.

Job Requirements: flexible hours, including early mornings, evenings and weekend shifts. Long periods of standing is to be expected. Shifts may be rotational and up to 12 hours in duration. Demonstrated wellness is required. Lifting is a requirement of the position (up to 30 pounds).
