This is the wording of the proposed Settlement Land Policy that Beneficiaries will vote on:

Our First Nation, in consultation with KDFN Beneficiaries, will put in place a Kwanlin Dün First Nation Settlement Land Act:

* To manage Settlement Lands
* To provide land for our people to live on and use
* To act as stewards for the future

Why do we need this policy?

Right now, people can only get approval to build houses, cabins or develop businesses on KDFN lands for three years at a time. But no one wants to build something if they only have a guarantee to use the land for three years.

However, KDFN’s constitution says Beneficiaries must approve a “Settlement Land Policy” before KDFN can tell people they use our lands for any more than three years at a time.

.

What are the benefits of approving the policy?

The Settlement Land Policy will allow KDFN to develop long-term approaches to taking care of our Settlement Lands, for current and future generations.

It will also allow KDFN to put a system in place that will let people use KDFN lands for cabins, houses and business development.

.

If approved, what will happen next?

If the Settlement Land Policy is approved, KDFN will develop a new law called the Settlement Land Act. It will also develop a long-term land management system.

As the policy states, the new law will be developed in consultation with KDFN Beneficiaries.

After the new law is passed, KDFN will be able to authorize the long-term use of our Settlement Lands.
