Reporting to the Manager of Restorative Justice & Community Safety, the Community Justice Worker is responsible for developing, coordinating, facilitating a variety of community justice initiatives, including but not limited to: pre/post charge diversions, restorative processes, and reintegration support and planning, including outreach to KDFN Citizens at the Whitehorse Correctional Centre (WCC). The Community Justice Worker will develop and maintain good working relationships with all our partner justice agencies, including but not limited to the RCMP, Yukon Corrections, Correctional Service Canada (CSC), Victim Services, Public Prosecutions Service Canada (PPSC), other Yukon First Nation (YFN) justice programs, and the Yukon Courts.

The Community Justice Worker will help guide the development of initiatives designed to improve access to justice for First Nation people throughout the Yukon. This will be accomplished by participating in a number of working groups to promote systemic change within the mainstream justice system as well as exploring options under the Administration of Justice Agreement.

Required Qualifications (what we screen/look for on your resume):  An equivalent combination of post-secondary education, combined with significant current/lived experience in the areas identified below, will equally be considered.

  • Post-secondary education in criminal justice, criminology, or another related field OR equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience working in a person-centered case management role.
  • Experience coordinating and facilitating restorative and/or circle practices will be considered an asset.
  • Experience working collaboratively amongst inter-departmental teams, including a proven ability to develop productive partnerships and working relationships.

Knowledge and skills (what we may assess/interview on):

  • Strong time management skills, the ability to prioritize daily tasks, organizational skills and effective decision-making abilities.
  • Strong knowledge of alternative and restorative justice practices both in theory and in practice.
  • Sound mediation, conflict resolution, and lay counselling
  • Ability to take initiative, work independently in a community
  • Strong record management skills with a thorough understanding of confidentiality.
  • Ability to exercise patience and empathy in dealing with stressful and emotional situations;
  • Ability to apply discretion and maintain confidentiality in all situations; and
  • Knowledge of the history and culture of the Kwanlin Dün First Nation community, goals, and strategic plan is required.

Knowledge of Yukon First Nations history within formalized education systems, residential schools and on-going intergenerational effects specific to education and social programming is an asset. Familiarity with Kwanlin Dün First Nation history, culture, goals and aspirations is required for success in the role.

5–7 high-level competencies that capture the essence of what’s needed, while leaving room for transferable skills.
