The Kwanlin Dün First Nation Education and Social Development Department is offering a training opportunity for an aspiring Speech and Language Pathologist Assistant (SLP-A) who is passionate about supporting children, youth, and families. Rooted in KDFN values, culture, and the Circle of Care model, this position provides hands on experience working under the supervision of a Speech and Language Pathologist to support communication, language, and literacy development for students from kindergarten to grade 12. The trainee will gain practical skills delivering individualized and group activities, preparing culturally responsive therapy materials, and collaborating with educators, Elders, and families. This opportunity is ideally suited for someone willing to complete or currently enrolled in a multi-year University/College diploma program in Speech and Language Pathology Assistant studies, while gaining meaningful, community-based experience. What We’re Looking for in Your Application
In your cover letter/resume, please tell us about:
- Your educational background (a minimum of 60% in Biology 12 and English 12 or 60% in college/university level courses are required).
- Your interest in supporting children and youth with communication, learning, and over all well‑being, and why this work is important to you.
- Any experience you have working with children, youth, or families — this can include paid work, volunteer roles, school placements, mentoring, childcare, coaching, or informal community involvement.
Knowledge and skills (what we may assess/interview on):
- Commitment to culturally safe, respectful, and community-centered care
- Strong interpersonal skills, including patience, compassion, and respect
- Reliable, flexible, and able to work collaboratively as part of a team
- Good organizational and communication skills
- Basic computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office and strong ability to use technology (e.g., tablets, apps, electronic assessment tools)
Requirements
- Willingness to enroll in and complete a College diploma in Speech and Language Pathology Assistant studies (part-time) , while also working directly with children and youth in the SLP-A trainee position.
- Willingness to learn, accept guidance, and grow under the supervision of a Speech and Language Pathologist
Knowledge of Yukon First Nations history within formalized education systems, residential schools and on-going intergenerational effects specific to education and social programming is an asset. Familiarity with Kwanlin Dün First Nation history, culture, goals and aspirations is required for success in the role.
