This program provides exciting and engaging recreation activities for KDFN children and youth (ages 6 – 18). The Youth Recreation Support Worker works as part of a larger team to help plan, lead, and report on programs and projects. Youth Recreation Support Workers work a variety of shifts ranging from overnight, day-time, and evening, depending on programming needs. You will facilitate activities taking place in various settings including, but not limited to, community centers, outdoor landscapes, neighbouring communities, and other unique locations around the Yukon, or out of territory. You will work both indoors and outdoors, being prepared to be in various weather conditions. Energy, motivation, compassion, and interest in providing safe and fun activities for youth are the most important elements of the role.

Required Qualifications (what we look for on your resume – Opportunities for training and development may be considered):

  • Coursework and workshops in Recreation, Outdoor Education, Youth Wellness, KDFN traditional knowledge, or similar.
  • Prior experience working with children and adolescents, either in formal or informal settings; including work experience in schools, summer camps, community centers, after-school programs, coaching sports, or other youth-focused organizations.
  • Class 5 Driver’s licence.

Desirable Certification/Skills include:

  • Class 4 Drivers licence
  • Swiftwater Rescue Training
  • Flatwater and moving water paddling experience and certification
  • Mental Health First Aid
  • Wilderness Advanced First Aid (or higher)

Required knowledge and skills (what we assess):

  • Leadership skills, ability to be a positive role model.
  • Knowledge of intergenerational impacts on young people and how this relates to development.
  • Having a genuine passion and enjoyment for working with youth.
  • Strong teamwork and collaboration.
  • Patient and supportive approach to conflict resolution and problem-solving with youth. Applies a strengths-based and trauma-informed practice.
  • Ability to use Microsoft programs such as Word, Outlook, and Excel. Ability to use work cell phones to communicate with youth participants and families.

Knowledge of Yukon First Nations history within formalized education systems, residential schools and on-going intergenerational effects specific to education and social programming is an asset. Familiarity with Kwanlin Dün First Nation history, culture, goals and aspirations is required for success in the role.

Conditions of Employment: A satisfactory pre-employment criminal records check with vulnerable sector search to be submitted upon hire; valid class 5 Driver’s License (Class 4 to be obtained within first 6 months). First Aid with CPR and Food Safe Level 1 are requirements to achieve within the first 3 months of employment.

  • Job Requirements: This position requires flexibility of working hours to arrange and participate in evening and weekend recreational activities; programming will take place in variable weather conditions including rain and snow, and sometimes in more remote locations on the Land. Must have the ability to demonstrate healthy lifestyle choices to promote healthy role modeling and have interest and ability to lead active programming. Willingness to learn how to lead recreational activities such as camping in a tent, seasonal sports such as cross-country skiing, canoeing, and biking (formal and in-formal training opportunities).
  • Willingness to drive participants in various KDFN government-owned vehicles that require Class 4 and Class 5 licence, including pulling a trailer.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
