Key Dates:

  • Close of Nominations: 4 p.m. on Wednesday, February 4, 2026
  • Mail-in Voting: Starts February 12 and ends March 18, 2026 at 6 p.m. — mailed to your address
  • Special Voting: Starts February 16 and ending March 16, 2026 at 12 p.m. voters will need to fill out a form to request a special ballot. 
  • Advance Poll: March 4, 9 a.m. – 7 p.m. at Nàkwät’à Kų̀ Potlatch House
  • Election Day Poll: March 18, 9 a.m. – 7 p.m. at Nàkwät’à Kų̀ Potlatch House

Criteria for Chief and Councillor Candidates:

Criteria for Chief and Councillor candidates Section 41 (Election Act 2012):

  1. A person is eligible to be a candidate for the office of either chief or councillor if he or she:

(a) is enrolled as a citizen;

(b) is 18 years of age or older on the voting date;

(c) declares that he or she will ordinarily reside in the traditional territory of the Kwanlin Dün First Nation for the entire term of his or her office;

(d) pursuant to subsection 22(4) of the constitution, has not been finally convicted of an indictable offense under the Criminal Code of Canada within three years immediately before the closing date for nominations;

(e) has at least 25 eligible voters sign a prescribed nomination form in support of his or her candidacy; and

(f) does not hold office as a city councillor, member of the Yukon Legislative Assembly or member of the Senate or the House of Commons of Canada or similar elected body; Eligible Candidates:

Criminal Record Section 15 (An Act to Amend the Election Act 2016):

(1) A citizen seeking office of either the chief or councillor shall submit, to the chief returning officer, their candidacy form and a current clearance letter from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police that confirms that the citizen has not been convicted of any indictable offences for the purpose of subsection 41(d) of the Act.

(2) “current” for the purpose of subsection (1) means that the clearance letter was issued to the citizen within 90 calendar days of the date the letter was filed with the chief returning officer.

(3) Paragraph 41(d) does not apply to a citizen who has been granted a pardon removing any penalties or punishments and preventing any new prosecution towards the citizen for which the pardon was given.

 

Call for Nomination

Nomination Section 44 (Election Act 2012)

(1) To be considered for candidacy, a citizen shall submit the necessary completed candidacy form for the office of either the chief or councillor to the chief returning officer at a predetermined location and

(a) at any time after the issue of the writ pursuant to section 6;

(b) no later than 42 calendar days before the voting date; and

(c) before four o’clock in the afternoon, Yukon Time, on the date of the close of nomination. (2) It shall be the responsibility of the potential candidate to ensure that all criteria are met and the necessary forms are completed for consideration.

Nomination Packages are available at the following locations:

  • KDFN Election Office – Kashgêk’ Building, 35 McIntyre Drive, Whitehorse

The Election Office will open on Friday, February 16, 2026 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. We will keep the office open Monday, Wednesday and Friday and through lunch hour from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. until the Close of Nominations (Wednesday, February 4 at 4 p.m.)

Nomination Forms must be submitted to the Chief Returning Officer (CRO) or Assistant Returning Officer (ARO) by Close of Nominations: 4 p.m. on Wednesday, February 4 at the Election Office.

 

Voting Dates

As per the Election Act (2013) Section 34:

Kwanlin Dün First Nation Citizens 18 years of age or older as of the date of the election and enrolled as a citizen are eligible to vote. For an election, every citizen, 18 years of age or older as of the voting date, shall have the right to one vote for each office being contested.

In addition to the Voting Day Poll, the following voting methods will be used in this election:
