September – Feelings Activities

This kit includes a language file, bulletin file, an activity file, a story file and a resource file. While the kit is labelled September, it can be used at any time that the resources fit a teacher’s objective. The kit currently explores September FEELINGS, SALMON AND IDENTITY as a time where students are in new classes and meeting new friends. Activities include exploring salmon anatomy, learning ways to catch salmon and how to process salmon.

ACTIVITY ONE:

Theme: Fishing For Feelings

Resources Needed:

  • Fishing rod and magnetic feelings in kit;
  • A bucket;

Instructions:

Ask four children to sit together with you. Tell the children “We are fishing for our feelings” Place the feelings in the bucket. One at a time, ask a child to draw their feelings while singing the Name Recognition Song. As the child fishes the feelings, name them.

Resources Needed:

  • Heart stones in kit;
  • A set of flash cards in kit

Instructions:

Ask the children to help lay out the flash cards. Associate a coloured stone heart to a feeling shown on the flash card. Ask “What colour are you feeling?”

Theme: I Love my Loved Ones: Orange Shirt Day

Resources Needed:

  • Orange felt/paper/fabric;
  • Glue;
  • Buttons
  • A battery operated candle

Instructions:

Provide each child with an orange shirt. Light the candle and sing The Sun Song.
Add buttons to the shirt to represent loved ones in the child’s life. Name family members and loved ones.
